Artemis II Launch Delayed: Helium Leak Forces Rollback to VAB

The Artemis II mission hit a snag. What was supposed to be the final “wet” dress rehearsal for the Orion spacecraft turned into a troubleshooting exercise. On February 19, 2026, engineers detected a problem with helium flow in the upper stage of the Space Launch System. Helium is critical for pressurizing fuel tanks, so a leak or blockage is not something you ignore.

The fix required moving the entire rocket. The massive vehicle had to be rolled back from the launch pad to the Vehicle Assembly Building at the Kennedy Space Center. This isn’t a quick repair. Disassembling, accessing the upper stage, fixing the helium system, and reassembling takes time.

The consequence was a significant shift in the launch calendar. Instead of lifting off in mid-February, Artemis II was pushed back. The new launch date landed on April 1, 2026. That’s a delay of over six weeks. For a program already stretched thin, that’s a heavy hit. But getting the helium flow right matters more than hitting an arbitrary date.
