George Gaylord Simpson wasn’t just someone who looked at old bones. He is the man who shaped our understanding of the speed and form of evolution. Born in Chicago on June 16, 1902, he eventually attended Yale University and earned a Ph.D. This is more than just an academic stepping stone. He died on October 6, 1984 in Tucson, Arizona. But his work did not disappear with him.
Simpson’s greatest contribution was to provide a clock for the theory of evolution. the debate was mostly was primarily about whether evolution occurs. the question was of “how” and “when”. He helped build the “modern synthesis” that combined Darwinian natural selection with Mendelian genetics. He showed that evolution is not always slow and steady. Sometimes there may be sudden spikes.

The Meaning of Evolution (1949) and The Major Features of Evolution (1953) expanded his theory. Principles of Animal Taxonomy (1961) synthesized his system of classification.
Simpson showed that paleontology is more than just a descriptive science. It was predictive. It can explain how life works. He gave us the tools to interpret the past correctly. This is important today. As we face rapid environmental change, understanding historical migration and adaptation patterns is more important than ever. We still use his maps.
