Galvanizing is exactly what the name implies. It uses zinc to shield iron or steel from the elements. Without this layer, exposure to air and moisture leads to rust. The process protects metal by applying a zinc coating. There are two main ways to do this. You can use hot dipping. Or you can use electrolytic deposition.
The chemistry behind it is simple but effective. Zinc acts as a sacrificial barrier. When iron and zinc touch, something specific happens in the presence of atmosphere. Oxidation occurs. But here is the trick. The oxidation spares the iron. It attacks the zinc instead.

This means the zinc corrodes first. It buys the steel time. The metal stays intact for longer. You see this on guardrails. You see it on nails. You see it in construction beams.

The method of application changes how the coating looks. Hot dipping creates a thicker layer. It bonds well. Electrolytic deposition offers a smoother finish. Both methods work. Both rely on the same principle. The zinc takes the hit. The steel survives.
So when you see galvanized steel, remember the invisible work. The zinc is there. It is waiting for the rain. It is ready to oxidize so the iron doesn’t have to.
